Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve is located in Kenya. Established in 1968, it was one of Kenya’s first marine parks. It is located about 90 miles (140 km) north of Mombasa, Kenya’s second largest city. Its coral gardens are merely 300 metres (980 ft) from the shore and are home to approximately 600 species of fish, 110 species of stony coral and countless invertebrates, crustaceans and molluscs.[1] Water temperature varies from 20 degrees Celsius (June to November) to 30 degrees Celsius (December to May). The park was designated as a biosphere reserve in 1979

Package Overview

Kenya’s most famous coastal city lies on an island connected to the mainland by bridges, and it’s an enchanting fusion of Kenya’s native cultures and its colonial past. Iconic buildings such as Fort Jesus dominate the skyline of this laid back beach city, giving some indication of its former colonial importance. Wandering the streets of Mombasa’s Old Town is tantamount to time travel, but the more modern part of the city is a dynamic and bustling commercial and industrial centre very much anchored in the here and now. A gateway to the many beautiful beaches and secluded islands of the Kenya Coast, Mombasa is also home to Moi International airport connecting to neighboring countries and the world.

Marine National Park One of the busiest of Kenya’s offshore reserves, Mombasa Marine National Park protects mangroves, seagrass beds, sandy beaches, and coral reef. Diving and snorkeling are popular activities – especially north of Mombasa, from Mtwapa Creek south to the entrance of Likoni. Seahorses, stingrays, and eels are among the marine creatures inhabiting the reserve, and the MV Dania is a popular wreck dive here. Those wishing to remain dry can view the diverse marine life from a glass-bottom boat. The popular beaches of Nyali, Bamburi, and Shanzu all provide access to the marine park.

Haller Park is a hit with animal lovers. Formerly called Bamburi Nature Trail, this inspirational project began in 1971, when Dr. René Haller transformed the abandoned limestone quarries here into a thriving nature reserve. Dr. Haller increased the mineral content of the soil, planted trees, added a fish farm, and created a wildlife park where each animal has a function within the flourishing ecosystem. Wildlife found here includes giraffes, Cape buffalo, zebras, waterbucks, and hippos. The park was also home to a famous interspecies couple that became an Internet sensation after the 130-year-old tortoise, Mzee, adopted Owen, an orphaned hippo.
