What to Expect
“Come touch the sky”
Climbing to 5,199 meters, Mount Kenya is the second tallest mountain in Africa. The scenery surrounding this designated World Heritage Site is breath-taking. It is pristine wilderness with lakes, tarns, glaciers, dense forest, mineral springs and a selection of rare and endangered species of animals, high altitude adapted plains game and unique montane and alpine vegetation. Visitors can enjoy mountain climbing, camping and caving with the mountain’s rugged glacier-clad peaks providing the perfect backdrop.
“Complete Wilderness”
Brilliant on a magnificent scale, the Meru and Kora sister parks feature luxuriant jungle, coursing rivers, verdant swamp, khaki grasslands and gaunt termite cathedrals all under the sky’s great blue bowl. Little visited and utterly unspoilt, few places are comparable to the remote and rugged atmosphere found here. Visitors can see Grevy’s zebras, elephants, Bohor reedbucks, hartebeests, pythons, puff adders, cobras, buffalos and more than 427 recorded species of birds.
“Lewa wildlife Conservancy”
Lewa serves as a safe refuge for the critically endangered black rhino and the endangered Grevy’s zebra, as well as the elephant, lion, giraffe, wild dog and other iconic wildlife species in Kenya. The Conservancy is also home to more than 400 species of birds.
“Mount Kenya wildlife Conservancy”
The Mt Kenya Wildlife Conservancy seeks to prevent the extinction of endangered wildlife species by breeding the animals with a view to returning them to their natural habitat. It was set up by internationally acclaimed movie star the late William Holden, TV personality and conservationist, the late Don and his wife Iris Hunt. At the heart of MKWC is the Animal Orphanage.
“Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve”
Ngare Ndare Forest is a lush indigenous forest at the foothills of Mt. Kenya. Azure pools glisten at the bottom of waterfalls and 200 year old trees stretch into the canopy supporting a rich variety of bird and animal life. The forest is a vital corridor that links the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to Mount Kenya, and one which elephants have been using for centuries.
In the 1980’s farmland became more developed on the southern side of the forest, and farmers came into regular clashes with elephants. In an attempt to alleviate fatal human/ wildlife conflict, the forest was fenced off from southern farmland in 1992. Yet the Ngare Ndare Forest Trust wasn’t registered until 2004, and a concession management agreement was finalized with the Kenya Forest Service only as recently as 2009.

Itinerary

Day 1Nairobi - Mount Kenya

Transfer from Nairobi to Mountain Rock Lodge on the western slopes of Mt Kenya. Options for horse riding, fishing and forest natural history walk in afternoon. Here at 2,000 m you begin acclimatization as you relax and prepare for the trek. (L/D)

Day 2Sirimon's Park gate - Old Moses

Short drive, crossing the equator en-route, to the Sirimon Park Gate. Trek up through magnificent virgin forests, bamboo and giant heather zones before reaching the high altitude moorland and our first hut, “Old Moses” at 3,340 m. This first day’s gentle trek takes 3-4 hours and climbs 690 m. (B/L/D)

Day 3Old moses Camp - Shipton's Camp

Up the spectacular Mackinder Valley past strange giant groundsel and lobelia plants to emerge onto what looks like a set from Star Trek – Shipton’s Camp at 4,236 m. A surreal setting below the towering peaks and glaciers, with its resident population of bizarre rock hyrax. (B/L/D)

Day 4Shipton's Camp - Hall Tarns, Gorges Valley

Early start to reach Pt Lenana at 4,895 m for sunrise. The climb starts on frozen scree and continues on a rocky track with some very minor scrambling. With a good moon you barely need a torch. Without a moon, then the pollution free sky, bang on the equator, gives you as good a view of the stars as almost anywhere on Earth. The climb takes between 3 and 5 hours and to add to the exhilaration Kilimanjaro is usually visible on the horizon. A further 3 hours down to Hall Tarns in the magnificent Gorges Valley for breakfast then a further gentle descent down the Gorges Valley past spectacular chasms, waterfalls and weirdly eroded lava flows to hot showers and log fires in Mt. Kenya huts. Wildlife viewing in evening – often from your cabin window as the elephant and buffalo graze outside! (B/L/D)

Day 5Gorges Valley - Chongoria

Descent on a broad track through bamboo and virgin rain forest to meet vehicles for the return to Nairobi – usually arriving mid to late afternoon. (B/L)
