 About Terry Stevenson

Terry Stevenson, originally from England, Terry has made Kenya his home since 1977.  He is the senior author of the Field Guide to the Birds of East Africa: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi—the only guide in the region to have a text and maps opposite plates format; this is also available as an app, with the added advantage of making it possible to hear many of the calls. Since the end of 2020 the book form has been fully revised as a 2nd Edition and includes an up to date text with the latest taxonomy, all additional species, and full colour range maps. Terry is also co-author to Birds of the Horn of Africa: Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia and Socotra.  Published in 2009, this acclaimed guide is the only one to this region.  He is a member of the East African Rarities Committee.  On November 30, 1986, he set a new World Big Day record with a total of 342 species in one day, of these a remarkable 330 were actually seen; the record stands today.

Itinerary

1ST DECEMBER 2022 Nairobi - Laragai House, Borana Conservancy

Fly by private air charter to Laragai, Borana Conservancy, where Terry and the staff will meet you on arrival and you will have exclusive use of this family style lodge. After lunch we will walk the grounds to familiarize ourselves with some of the more common widespread species and then take an afternoon game drive, which will include a visit to the nearby dam. Birds to look out for include Little Grebe, Great White Pelican, a variety of herons, ibis and egrets, African Spoonbill, Egyptian Goose, Grey Crowned-Crane, and at this time of year several species of migrant shorebirds, some of which will have traveled all the way from their breeding grounds in northern Russia – we hope to see Wood and Green Sandpipers, Little Stint, Common Greenshank, and perhaps an unexpected rarity. We’ll also enjoy our first mammals – Impala and Thomson’s Gazelle, the endangered Grevy Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Cape Buffalo, Savannah Elephant, Lion, or if really lucky Leopard and Cheetah. After a traditional sundowner on the plains we will return to our lodge – the first of four nights there.

2ND - 4TH DECEMBER 2022Laragai House, Borana Conservancy

During 3 three full days based at Laragai we will take a mix of drives and walks to explore the grassy plains, the Ngare Ndare forest and canopy walkway, and visit the lowlands around Il Ngwezi. In addition to the water birds mentioned above we hope to see the following: Somali Ostrich, Black-winged Kite, Blackchested Snake-Eagle, Pallid and Montagu’s Harriers, Eastern Chanting-Goshawk, Tawny and Martial Eagles, Helmeted and Vulturine Guineafowl, Yellow-necked Spurfowl, Stone Partridge, Kori, White-bellied and Blackbellied Bustards, Crowned and Blacksmith Lapwings, Meyer’s and Orange-bellied Parrots, the endemic Hartlaub’s Turaco, White-bellied Go-away-bird, Speckled and Blue-naped Mousebird, Narina’s Trogon, Little Bee-eater, Lilac-breasted Roller, Green Woodhoopoe, Northern Red-billed and Von der Decken’s Hornbills, Red-fronted Barbet, Greater Honeyguide (perhaps trying to lead us to a wild bee hive), Nubian Woodpecker, Foxy Lark, Yellow-throated Longclaw, Little Rock-Thrush, White-eyed Slaty Flycatcher, Chin-spot Batis, African Paradise-Flycatcher, Scarlet-chested and Variable Sunbirds, Sulphur-breasted and Rosy-patched Bush shrike, African Blackheaded Oriole, Violet-backed and Superb Starlings, Speke’s Weaver, Purple Grenadier, and Red-cheeked Cordon bleu. Returning from our sundowners we’ll also be keeping a lookout for Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl and Montane Nightjar.

5TH DECEMBER 2022Laragai House - Manda Island

Today we’ll take a 2-hour charter flight and head to the Kenya coast and Manda Island. Based on this tranquil island we’ll spend five nights, giving us ample time to explore the shores, woodland and scrub (the only accessible place on earth to see the Manda Boubou). We’ll also walk amongst the palms and giant baobab trees, visit the other worldly mangrove creeks, and hopefully encounter many of the seabirds which abound there.

6TH - 9TH DECEMBER 2022Manda Bay

During four full days we’ll visit all the areas mentioned above and also have time for beach walking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and perhaps (for the more energetic) a little water skiing, and for those with an interest in Arab-Swahili history, a visit to Lamu Town. Our birding excursions will give us excellent opportunities to see the following seabirds – Masked Booby, Dimorphic Egret, the unique Crabplover (a shorebird scientifically placed in its own family and uniquely nesting in burrows underground), Grey Plover, Terek Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Whimbrel, Sooty Gull, Lesser Crested, Greater Crested, Common, Saunder’s, Bridled and Sooty Terns, Lesser and Brown Noddy Terns. Inland and around the lodge we should see the Slender Tailed Nightjar, African Palm-Swift, Northern Carmine Bee-eater, Common  Scimitar bill, Red- fronted Tinker bird, Brown  Breasted Barbet,  the lofty  Eastern Nicator, Yellow-bellied Greenbul, Spotted Morning Thrush, Bearded Scrub-Robin, East Coast Flycatcher, Variable, Mouse coloured, Amethyst  and not so common Purple banded Sunbird, Black-backed Puffback, African Golden Oriole, both the Grey headed bush Shrike and Sulphur breasted Bush Strike, Golden Palm Weaver and the elusive Peter’s Twinspot. Of the Raptors we should see Ospreys and even Bat hawks hunting Carmine bee-eaters at Dusk. These are just some of the birds we expect to see as well as the Manda  Boubou!
